Emergent Balanced Literacy for Pre-K and Early Elementary – Apps Included!

What:  The prospect of teaching students with disabilities to begin to read with comprehension and begin to write generatively can seem overwhelming. This presentation will cover assessment for students who are difficult to assess; shared reading (developing a love of reading, and supporting language through reading); emergent writing (beginning to write with symbols, words, and the alphabet); self-selected story listening (listening to and interacting with books across a range of genre); and alphabet interaction and phonemic awareness (understanding spoken language at the word, syllable, and letter level).

And?  Attendees can earn .6 ASHA CEUs if they attend the entire Friday workshop.

Tarheel Reader Books for Older Students - Caution!!

As you likely know, the wonderful FREE website, Tarheel Reader has lots of books that are age-respectful and engaging for older students who are emergent readers.

But don't forget that you can search ONLY for those slightly edgy books, by changing the rating to C (caution).

Alphabet EVERYWHERE! (Including the Bathroom)

You just never know when you might need to use the alphabet, to spell a word, or just model first letter clues.  This is an example of a mockup of a student's Big Keys keyboard, printed in color, laminated, and placed around the house.  I took a picture of the one resting on the towel rack in the bathroom.
